Materials You’ll Need:

  • Fusible interfacing
  • Outer fabric
  • Lining fabric
  • Zipper (with two pulls if desired)
  • Fabric tab
  • Sewing machine
  • Zipper foot attachment
  • Scissors, pins, and iron

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prepare the Materials

  • Cut the fusible interfacing to the same size as your pattern.
  • Cut two pieces each of the outer fabric and lining fabric to 12.5cm x 27cm (5" x 10.6").

2. Attach the Fusible Interfacing

  • Lay the fusible interfacing on the inner side of the outer fabric.
  • Use an iron to fuse the interfacing to the fabric, following the manufacturer’s instructions.

3. Install the Zipper

  • Place the zipper face down on the outer fabric with the right side facing up, aligning the edges.
  • Lay the lining fabric on top of the outer fabric and zipper, with the right sides facing each other. Pin it in place.
  • Sew along the pinned edge using a zipper foot.
  • Fold the seam allowance toward the lining side and topstitch to secure it.

4. Repeat for the Other Side

  • Repeat the process for the other side of the zipper with the remaining outer and lining fabric.
  • Topstitch to secure both layers together.

5. Attach Zipper Pulls

  • Attach the zipper pull to the zipper tape.
  • If using two pulls, install one on each side for easier opening and closing.

6. Sew the Bottom Seam

  • Trim the seam allowance to shape the pouch into a square.
  • Leave a 1.5cm (0.6") seam allowance for both the outer fabric and lining.
  • Sew the bottom edges of the outer fabric and lining. Leave a small opening on the lining side for turning the pouch right side out later.

7. Align and Sew the Zipper Area

  • Place the bottom seam and zipper so they face each other.
  • Align the bottom of the outer fabric with the zipper, ensuring it’s neat.

8. Create the Fabric Tab

  • Cut a fabric tab to 14cm x 7cm (5.5" x 2.8").
  • Fold and sew the fabric tab to create a loop.
  • Place the tab between the layers of the outer fabric, and sew along both sides with a 1cm (0.4") seam allowance.

9. Turn the Pouch Right Side Out

  • Turn the pouch inside out and smooth out any wrinkles.
  • Shape both ends into diamonds as shown in the pattern to form a rectangle.
  • Sew along the diamond edges with a 1cm (0.4") seam allowance, then trim the seam allowance to reduce bulk.
  • Turn the pouch right side out again.

10. Finish the Ends and Lining

  • Sew the opening in the lining to close it neatly.
  • Shape the pouch carefully for a polished look.
